2.1.2 Safe to install
Many pace calculator applications exist that estimate a finishing time based on maintaining a consistent pace throughout the race. However, in reality, runners rarely hold an even pace, and attempting to do so may prevent optimal performance.
True Pace offers the capability to calculate expected finishing times using variable paces for each mile or kilometer, providing a more realistic projection of race outcomes.
With True Pace, users can:
- Account for pacing variations caused by terrain features such as substantial inclines at specific miles
- Compare the projected results of different pacing strategies
- Visualize pace fluctuations throughout the race through graphical representations
- Add notes to plan race day logistics, including hills, hydration stations, and fueling strategies
- Share race plans and results with friends or coaches
- Calculate race times with dynamic paces for various race distances including 5K, 10K, 10 miles, half marathon, and marathon
Pacing Strategy Analysis
True Pace simplifies the process of evaluating multiple pacing strategies. For example, users can assess how their marathon finish time might vary if they run the first 20 miles at 8-minute miles and then accelerate to 7:45 miles for the final stretch. The app provides detailed predictions for each scenario.
Furthermore, users can compare different approaches—such as starting at 8:15 minutes per mile and gradually increasing speed by five seconds every six miles—to identify the most suitable plan. The interface allows quick adjustments and comparisons, minimizing manual data entry hassles.
The feature to duplicate existing race plans facilitates experimentation with new pacing strategies without losing previous data.
If a runner prefers unconventional tactics—such as positive splits—the app supports that approach as well.
Visualization Tools
An interactive graph called the “Paceline” visually depicts how pace varies during the race. This feature is especially useful for courses with significant elevation changes, allowing runners to anticipate how hills will influence their speed. Swiping across the graph reveals detailed pace information for each mile.
Race Notes
The app enables users to attach notes to individual miles or kilometers, serving as reminders for upcoming hills, hydration points, fueling needs, or motivational messages—emojis recommended to make notes engaging and memorable!
Sharing and Device Integration
Once races are planned and saved, they can be easily shared via messages, email, or AirDrop. Recipients will need True Pace installed to view details; fortunately, it is a free application. Users can also transfer race plans to their Apple Watch, which displays target paces per mile during training and racing. Later Apple Watch models further enhance experience with metrics such as stride length and vertical oscillation.
Development Background
True Pace was developed by an independent programmer passionate about running and personal records. Frustrated with unreliable spreadsheet methods for pace calculations, he created this app. All features are accessible free of charge.
The only limitation is that without an in-app purchase, only two races can be saved at a time. Users can delete saved races to create space for new ones. Supporters interested in unlimited saving functionality are encouraged to purchase the upgrade to help sustain ongoing development.
